Little bit of Info I found Today

Hey, I found a little bit of info in a book about the gunpowder plot.

Taken from, Kenyon.P.J (1981) A Dictionary of British History: London. Laurence Urdang Associates Ltd

Gunpowder Plot. A conspiracy to blow up the Houses of Parliament and James I on 5 Nov 1605. It was led by Robert *Catesby, whose co-conspirators included Robert Winter, John Wright, and Guy Fawkes , all staunch Roman Catholics. The group secured a cellar under the House of Lords, in which about 30 barrels of gunpowder were secreted (March 1605). The plot was uncovered when an anonymous letter of warning to stay away from parliament was sent to a Catholic MP. Guy Fawkes was arrested in the cellar on 4 Nov, and the conspirators were subsequently executed.

  1. The Gun powder time line

How did Gunpowder influence the world?

How did it influence the Military?

Black Powder was invented between 890-1050AD
However it is debated weather this was the Chinese or Arabs or a combination of both. This is an area of controversy in history.

It was later refined into Gunpowder in Europe

There is also references in history that it was invented around 300BC. However it could also be argued it was invented by the Persians at the time of Alexander the Great, as Nathaniel Brassey Halhed suggested in his book “ordinations of the Pondits” (1776). “it will no dought strike the reader with wonder to find prohibition of firearms in records of such”

1600’s- Gunpowder production began at Waltham Abby

1605-The Gun Powder plotters set the 5th of November as the date they would blow up the houses of parliament. However the night before they were discovered.

1605- Gunpowder was made using sulphur, charcoal, sulphur and Potassium Nitrate.

    1627-Minning
The earliest record which surves today comes from Hungary.

1664- First recorded Gunpowder Mill at Waltham Abbey. This shows us how the production techniques have developed from when it started being made to being made on a mass scale on an industrial scale

1681- The first large scale use of Gunpowder in civil engineering was in the construction of the canal Du Midi in Southern France.

1793-1814 The Napoleonic Wars, production of Gunpowder at Waltham Abbey rises from 5,000 to 25,000 barrels a year. This shows the increasing high demand for the distribution of Gunpowder and this also shows it was a significant material.

1817-canals were made using gunpowder diversely

1857-Gunpowder was used in Tunnel and Railway production.

1879- One compound in Gunpowder caused very extreme effects on people working in the mills with it
    If injested-Nitroglycerine

1880’s-The Wild West- From my own knowledge I know Gunpowder was extremely widely used in this time period.

1939-British Empire declares War on Germany

1941-Gunpowder production ceases at Waltham Abbey
